Black Isle Studios was the Role Playing Game Division of Interplay dedicated to making role playing games for console and computer systems. In addition to developing original titles such as Fallout, Black Isle also owned the exclusive license to produce all electronic entertainment games for the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Forgotten Realms and Planescape product lines.

Black Isle was a casualty of parent publisher Interplay's financial troubles -- the studio was closed in December of 2003.

However, 9 years later in 2012, Interplay would reopen the studio after MDK2 HD proved to be a financial success.
